![]() ![]() EQ adjustments actually change the tonal quality of the clip. In professional mixing, EQ is what separates a good mix from a bad one. Perhaps the most glaring problem with MixPad is that there are no options for setting EQ (improving treble, bass, and other audio issues). Even zooming in on a clip is strangely difficult: You can zoom vertically and horizontally using arrows and buttons, but they look dated and move too incrementally. You can name tracks and organize them, but MixPad is still underpowered in terms of adding tags to tracks to organize them, or other visual cues. The software provides no options for setting recording levels and viewing an obvious record volume indicator, and there’s no metronome. WavePad-another program in the suite intended as a recording app-does support VST plug-ins. Plug-in support would be a nice-to-have feature in MixPad, but recording is not really the program’s intended use. Without plug-in support though, the program becomes a lot less useful. That’s a shame, because you actually can use MixPad for recording live instruments. So, if you use a program such as Native Instruments Guitar Rig as a plug-in for your recording software, it will not be available from MixPad. The bad news for audio professionals is that unlike the Windows version of the program, MixPad for Mac does not support VST plug-ins or any other audio plug-ins to extend the product. MixPad also supports drag and drop for audio clips, so you can create tracks in another program and drop them into MixPad for mixing as part of a production workflow. This simplicity at least makes the program easy to learn. The trial version is limited to 14 days.MixPad has a simple interface that makes it easy to learn how to mix audio clips, but the program lacks the depth required for professional mixing. But MixPad does more than make it easy to mix and record high-quality audio productions, though it makes it fun, too.Įditors' note: This is a review of the full version of MixPad Audio Mixer 2.2. MixPad replaces the table-sized mixing panels and multitrack recorders that only pro studios could afford not so long ago. With some effort and direction, a Top 40 hit would surely emerge. With just some brief and aimless fiddling, we were able to turn a sonic mish-mash into an improvised mash-up that didn't sound half bad. We were also able to change tracks' playback speed to synchronize pitch. Pressing the Fx button called up a dialog that we could use to string together a chain of effects to apply in sequence. The extensive zoom and expand controls let us view entire audio clips or individual passages in tiny fractions, while the Pan slider shifted the sound of the particular track from the right channel to the left. Clicking the Play button started both clips playing at once, though we could also start either clip playing at a specific time. MixPad quickly scanned each clip and displayed its audio spectrum and title in the selected track and its data in the Clip Manager. We clicked Load Clip, browsed to a selection of tunes ripped from a CD, and loaded two, one clip each in the first two of the five default tracks. Since each track can hold multiple clips, and MixPad can manage dozens of tracks, this is a handy feature, and you can toggle it closed when you don't need it. Selecting the optional Clip Manager on the View menu opened a right-hand panel displaying open clips. The setup options basically involve selecting a recording device and output folder, while the Audio options included sample rate and other specifications. The main window displays each track horizontally, each with its own control console. Media-player-like buttons and time indicators give MixPad's interface a familiar feel. ![]() It works as a standalone app but integrates seamlessly with NCH's other media production and editing tools via the Toolbox utility. It can mix and process more than 100 tracks at once in most audio formats, and it can also extract audio from video files as well as rip CDs. MixPad Audio Mixer from NCH Software is a digital multitrack mixing suite that is easy to use yet capable of producing professional-quality mixes.
